Breathe Arts Health Research began life as part of Guy’s and St Thomas’s Charity before becoming a separate social entity in 2012. We’ve managed to fit a lot into our story so far – read on to find out more about our work.

2017

WINTER

  • Breathe are invited to speak at the TEDxNHS in London

AUTUMN

  • Performing Arts Manager Tim presents at Culture Health and Wellbeing International Conference in Bristol
  • Breathe features in the London Mayor’s campaign #LondonIsOpen
  • David Owen QC is the new chairman of the Breathe board
  • For the first time we run the Breathe Magic Intensive Therapy Camp for Young People with Hemiplegia in the Midlands.

  • Sue Gallagher, former Chief Executive of Merton, Sutton and Wandsworth Health Authority, joins the Breathe Board of Directors
  • Breathe features on BBC Breakfast
  • NHS Bromley Clinical Commissioning Group funds a place for a child on the Breathe Magic Intensive Therapy Programme 
  • Clinical Lead Rebecca Johnson is talking at the annual conference of the British Association of Brain Injury Case Managers (BABICM)
  • Breathe Research Director Dr Daisy Fancourt launches her book Arts in Health. Designing and Researching Interventions 

SPRING

  • Research Lead Dr. Daisy Fancourt speaks at the National Theatre’s Clore Learning Centre about how the well-being agenda in the UK has seen a huge increase of interest over the past few years
  • James Cofone runs the Virgin London Marathon to raise funds for the Breathe Magic Intensive Therapy Programme
  • Performing Arts Coordinator, Hannah Dye, joins the Breathe team
  • Breathe Magic Project Coordinator Adam Simmons joins the team
  • Breathe sets up the Trust Harmonix, the GSTC staff community choir
  • Through placement schemes with London Southbank University and Canterbury University Breathe gives Higher Education students the chance to gain practical experience
  • Breathe’s Research Director Dr Daisy Fancourt is awarded a £250,000 Fellowship from the Wellcome Trust for a 3-year project entitled ‘Arts, Society and Public Health’

2016

WINTER

  • Breathe presents its work at the NHS EXPO 2016
  • Breathe is named one of the three finalist of the Royal Society for Public Health, Health & Wellbeing – Arts & Health Awards
  • We launch our investigation into the psycho-social benefits of the Breathe Magic Intensive Therapy Programme for Young People with Hemiplegia
  • The Thirty Club donates an astonishing £12.000 making it the largest donation Breathe has received in 2016
  • Christine and Marie, supporters of Breathe, take on the challenge of cycling through Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam to fundraise for a child’s place on the programme

AUTUMN

  • The World Innovation Summit in Health (WISH) chose Breathe to be part of a showcase of 20 remarkable healthcare innovations. The Breathe teams goes to Doha in Qatar and presents its programmes
  • Breathe are invited to speak at the TEDxNHS 2016 event
  • Film and theatre actress Imelda Staunton visits our Breathe Magic Intensive Therapy Programme
  • The Mondrian Hotel gives support to local businesses such as Breathe and welcomes families who take part in our programme
  • Ian Williamson, father of young magician Riley, raises awareness for Breathe with an unusual strategy: through Stock Hatch Racing

  • Clinical Leads Rebecca Johnson and Skye Sergeant join the Breathe team
  • Breathe Managing Director Yvonne Farquharson speaks at the Arts, Health and Wellbeing and Commissioning Round Table at the Houses of Parliament
  • Breathe teams up with King’s Cultural Institute to launch a collaboration network between creatives and health institutions and offer for innovative ideas in healthcare to be awarded seed-investment
  • Breathe present their new website which includes an in-depth knowledge base, news blog and events diary
  • Launch of The Art of Portering, a new performing arts pilot programme involving the portering staff at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals and the performance poet Simon Mole
  • We set up Breathe… Amplifies, a programme which helps emerging artists to get more exposure.

  • NHS England awards Breathe the national NHS Innovation Challenge Award 2016
  • Breathe recruits two new clinical leads, Skye Sergeant and Rebecca Johnson
  • Managing Director Yvonne Farquharson and Research Lead Daisy Fancourt present a webinar for the Royal Society of Public Health which is broadcast to 17 countries
  • Breathe opens the National Arts In Health Conference & Showcase at the Royal Festival Hall, presenting to the Secretary of State for Health amongst others
  • Launched our new consultancy programme

  • Breathe’s first birthday!

  • Our London camp magic is commissioned as a clinical service by Lambeth Clinical Commissioning Group
  • Jeremy Hunt, Secretary of State for Health and local MP for South West Surrey, visits the Breathe Magic camp in Surrey and says: “Breathe Magic is a prime example of developing new approaches to healthcare which harness the therapeutic benefits of the arts and creativity. Breathe has shown through clinical research of their Breathe Magic Camps that there is a demonstrable clinical and cost benefit to the NHS.”

  • Annegret Märten joins as Administrator and Tim Osborn as Project Coordinator
  • Breathe feature in The Magic Circle’s monthly magazine The Magic Circular
  • Our team of volunteers and resident magicians continues to grow

  • In partnership with GO Create! at Great Ormond Street Hospital we pilot our innovative project to improve the wellbeing of young people with a range of mental and physical health problems

2012

  • Yvonne Farquharson sets up Breathe Arts Health Research
  • Guy’s and St Thomas’ Charity contract Breathe to run the Performing Arts programme across Guy’s and St Thomas’s Hospitals and run a Breathe Magic programme at the Greenwood Theatre in London
  • Yvonne recruits a board of directors: Dr Dido Green, Dr Mike Wright, Ms Lucy Cottrell and Mr David Owen Q.C.
  • Yvonne presents at The Art of Good Health and Wellbeing in Fremantle, Australia
