Breathe Arts Health Research began life as part of Guy’s and St Thomas’s Charity before becoming a separate social entity in 2012. We’ve managed to fit a lot into our story so far – read on to find out more about our work.

2016

SPRING

  • NHS England awards Breathe the national NHS Innovation Challenge Award 2016
  • Breathe recruits two new clinical leads, Skye Sergeant and Rebecca Johnson
  • Managing Director Yvonne Farquharson and Research Lead Daisy Fancourt present a webinar for the Royal Society of Public Health which is broadcast to 17 countries
  • Breathe opens the National Arts In Health Conference & Showcase at the Royal Festival Hall, presenting to the Secretary of State for Health amongst others

2015

WINTER

  • Breathe wins PwC UK Social Enterprise Innovation Award
  • Pooh Corner Kindergarten Kensingtonand Crescent II Kindergarten select us as their Charity of the Year 2016
  • Breathe Magic into Stroke Rehab programme launched in Richmond

AUTUMN

  • First pilot of Breathe Magic – The Next Stage programme
  • Gavin Tiffin cycles to Russia to raise funds for Breathe
  • Breathe’s Charity of the Year Thomas’s Kensington School raises a whopping £31,368
  • Breathe wins the Innovation in Lambeth 2015 Lammy Award from NHS Lambeth Clinical Commissioning Group
  • Kat Penney joins Breathe as Office Manager

SUMMER

  • Breathe exhibits at the Health Care Commissioning Show at Excel, London
  • Director of Research Dido Green leaves and Dr Daisy Fancourt joins as Research Lead
  • Ahmed Abdeldayem joins as Project Manager for Breathe Magic
  • Breathe presents at Southwark & Lambeth Integrated Care (SLIC)

SPRING

  • Our Charity of the Year, Thomas’s Kensington School, holds a week of fundraising activities
  • The first Breathe Magic Camp to be held over Easter

2014

WINTER

  • Thomas’s Kensington School announces they have selected Breathe as their Charity of the Year
  • Breathe Magic Into Your Work – corporate training launched with Lexis Nexis
  • Magicians.co.uk nominate Breathe as their Charity of the Year 2015
  • Breathe magician, Dr Will Houstoun, wins Close-Up Magician of the Year
  • Our Managing Director Yvonne Farquharson is invited to Westminster to be on the panel of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Civil Society and Volunteering
  • Staff member Annegret Märten runs the Brighton half-marathon to raise funds for Breathe
  • Amarlie Moore joins Breathe as Clinical Lead

AUTUMN

  • Breathe Magic Camp meets world-famous magician Dynamo
  • We feature on BBC Breakfast, BBC Health News, CBBC Newsround, The Guardian and The Evening Standard
  • Breathe receives a Certificate of Commendation at the 2014 WellChild Awards
  • Breathe reaches the final shortlists for the Art, Mental Health & Wellbeing award from Positive Practice in Mental Health and for the Innovation in Child & Adolescent Mental Health Services Award
  • Lead Clinician Amarlie Moore and Lead Magician Richard McDougall present at the HemiHelp Professionals Conference in London
  • Breathe listed as one of the New Radicals 2014 – 50 radical-thinking individuals and organisations changing Britain for the better, chosen by Nesta and The Observer
  • Breathe Magic for Stroke Rehab pilot with Newham Stroke Club

SUMMER

  • Breathe partners with Shakespeare’s Globe and The National Theatre’s Watch This Space Festival
  • First-ever Breathe Magic Camp in Wales, in partnership with Bobath Children’s Therapy Centre
  • NHS Wandsworth CCG and NHS West Kent recognise and support places on the Breathe Magic programme
  • Every Child Needs A Mentor – first Breathe Magic mentor training programme launched

SPRING

  • We move into our current offices at the Clarence Centre for Enterprise and Innovation
  • Breathe features in the Chief Medical Officer’s annual report
  • The Arts Health Institute rolls out the first Breathe Magic Camp in Australia

2013

WINTER

  • Breathe’s first birthday! 

AUTUMN

  • Our London camp magic is commissioned as a clinical service by Lambeth Clinical Commissioning Group
  • Jeremy Hunt, Secretary of State for Health and local MP for South West Surrey, visits the Breathe Magic camp in Surrey and says: “Breathe Magic is a prime example of developing new approaches to healthcare which harness the therapeutic benefits of the arts and creativity. Breathe has shown through clinical research of their Breathe Magic Camps that there is a demonstrable clinical and cost benefit to the NHS.”

SUMMER

  • Annegret Märten joins as Administrator and Tim Osborn as Project Coordinator
  • Breathe feature in The Magic Circle’s monthly magazine The Magic Circular
  • Our team of volunteers and resident magicians continues to grow

SPRING

  • In partnership with GO Create! at Great Ormond Street Hospital we pilot our innovative project to improve the wellbeing of young people with a range of mental and physical health problems

2012

  • Yvonne Farquharson sets up Breathe Arts Health Research
  • Guy’s and St Thomas’ Charity contract Breathe to run the Performing Arts programme across Guy’s and St Thomas’s Hospitals and run a Breathe Magic programme at the Greenwood Theatre in London
  • Yvonne recruits a board of directors: Dr Dido Green, Dr Mike Wright, Ms Lucy Cottrell and Mr David Owen Q.C.
  • Yvonne presents at The Art of Good Health and Wellbeing in Fremantle, Australia
