Our Magicians

DAVID OWEN | Magician & Founding Board Member

David is a Member of The Magic Circle and a leading commercial arbitrator, mediator and barrister.

His advocacy and legal skills led him to being appointed as Queen’s Counsel (QC) in 2006, and he is recognised as a leading figure in the world of dispute resolution. Developing communication skills has always been an integral part of his work. He has trained lawyers to become effective advocates and now trains groups and individuals on presentation and communication techniques, as well as communicating in situations of conflict.

David was elected into The Magic Circle in his teens and has performed and taught magic at corporate and private events around the world as well as on television. His lifelong interest in using magic performance skills in other contexts, and as a way of empowering individuals by increasing their confidence, is what led him to be one of our founding Board of Directors.

RICHARD McDOUGALL

One of the founding magicians of Breathe Magic, Richard is a Member of The Inner Magic Circle with Gold Star and a former World Open Champion for Close-Up Magic.

He performs for private and corporate clients worldwide and feels fortunate to have appeared at several events hosted by HM The Queen, including a private party to celebrate her Diamond Jubilee, which was attended by forty Kings and Queens. He has also created magic for other performers, most notably a Derren Brown TV show which won the Silver Rose of Montreux.

Richard’s approach is recognised by other magicians, so he is often booked to lecture on the performance and presentation of magic at prestigious magic conventions around the world, and was a guest presenter on the first live global online magic event EMC. He now spends much of his time teaching and speaking to the business community on the impact of body language.

In the field of medicine, Richard has taught in seminars at London’s Ministry of Health and worked with senior oncologists in Spain, France, Hungary and Brazil, helping them to deliver scientific data more effectively and improve awareness and inter-personal skills with patients.

DR WILL HOUSTOUN

Will was The Magic Circle Close-Up Magician of the Year in 2015 and the youngest ever European Champion of Close-Up Magic. He is Member of The Inner Magic Circle with Gold Star and holds a PhD on Victorian Magic.

Will edits The Magic Circle’s 105 year-old magazine plus other specialist journals. He has written two books on the history of conjuring and released a three DVD instructional set for magicians which teaches his original creations.

Away from the magic world, Will has acted as a consultant on productions such as Martin Scorsese’s multi Oscar-winning film Hugo and the BBC’s Golden Globe-winning TV series Wolf Hall. He has been featured as an expert on magic by numerous newspapers and radio programmes, and advised organisations including The Wellcome Trust, KPMG, The Victoria & Albert Museum and The Royal Shakespeare Company.

Will has combined his interests in magic and history by writing and internationally performing his one-man show Dr Houstoun’s Conjuring.

LAURA LONDON

Laura is a successful magician, compere and sleight of hand artist who performs to a wide range of audiences in an eclectic mix of venues worldwide.

In 2003 aged 18 she became a member of The Magic Circle and landed her first TV series Playing Tricks within six months of turning professional. Other TV work includes The Magic Party for BBC Northern Ireland, Children in Need and Penn and Teller’s Fool Us on ITV1.

Laura has performed in places as diverse as Buckingham Palace for the Queen’s 80th birthday and parties for HRH Prince Charles, an off-Broadway show in New York and VIP backstage parties at top festivals including Glastonbury and Download. Her work has taken her across the globe to appear for clients including Formula 1, Porsche, Universal Records, Soho House, DKNY, Champney’s, the House of Commons, Bentley’s Entertainment and Warner Brothers.

CHRISTOPHER HOWELL

Receiving a box of simple magic tricks for Christmas at the age of seven was the kick-starter for Christopher’s fascination with magic, which grew from a hobby into a lifelong passion.

After moving from the US to London as a teenager he took a double BA in Theatre Arts and Studio Arts and enjoyed everything the performance arts scene in London had to offer. Alongside developing his magic acts, he also studied opera singing in London and Bologna in Italy.

Christopher has performed as a Magic Circle magician for private parties and corporate events throughout the UK, Europe, the Middle East and North America. He’s produced multiple diverse acts including close-up magic, theatrical magic shows, corporate training and specially commissioned projects.
