Breathe Regularly January-March 2017 Season Overview

From Mon-09-Jan 12pm to Wed-29-Mar 3a

Welcome to Breathe Regularly

These free lunchtime performances are brought to you by Breathe Arts Health Research in partnership with Guy’s & St Thomas’ Charity. Our winter/spring season for 2017 has lots to inspire you for the new year. We have performances to be amazed by, relax to, take part in and some that will also allow time for quiet reflection too. Alongside a lively programme of concerts, we are launching three fresh initiatives: GSTFT staff have the chance to join a brand-new community choir starting in January; the porters get geared up to embrace the arts around the hospital, whilst out in the community we start up a music programme to support new mums. Come and join us in some lively events in our unique hospital venues.

New Year, New Beginnings

Our new Breathe Regularly programme really packs a punch this season. There are so many exciting things to discover and try out. We have some remarkable new talents making their debut in the programme including Solasta, Ineza and Maz O’Connor; some popular hip-swinging favourites like the Sugar Kings & Merengue Mondays to get you moving and a large international flavour from Greece, Brazil, India and China, plus a 30-piece orchestra from the US making a special guest appearance whilst on tour. Our Breathing Spaces are expanding too, to take the performing programme deeper into the hospitals and to new audiences. Finally, we offer some new projects for staff and to the communities of Lambeth & Southwark to experience just how the arts impacts positively on health and well-being.

Raising The Roof – New Staff Community Choir

Did you know that singing is really good for you? It’s a natural stress reliever, enhances mental awareness, concentration and memory, can help reduce the risk of heart disease, lower blood pressure and develop healthier breathing patterns. And best of all it releases endorphins making you feel happy! Why wouldn’t you want to sing? Well you can!

From Monday 9th January, we are offering weekly community choir singing throughout January and February for all staff from all 3 hospitals and the community teams. Led by Mike King (of MyCoolSingers) sessions will run from 6pm – 8pm in Atrium 1 at Guy’s Hospital. No previous singing experience is needed and you can just turn up and the more the merrier so get your teams to come along and sing away the winter blues together!

The Art of Portering

Early in 2017, in partnership with the Guy’s & St Thomas Charity Fine Arts Collection team and the hospital porters team our hospital porters will begin fl
ying the flag for the arts in health in a new and innovative way. We will be training the team to be knowledgeable and familiar with the many incredible pieces of art around the hospitals and to be able to talk about them to patients as they escort them around. The collection is made up of hundreds of paintings, sculptures and fascinating artefacts and is on display to enhance the hospital environment for the benefit of patients and staff, and who better to show it off on a day-to-day basis than our teams of porters?

Singing Away The Blues…

Starting in March, a new project involving singing and music-making will be launched in Lambeth & Southwark for new mum’s who are experiencing stress, anxiety and low mood. Following on from an in-depth research programme piloted by the Royal College of Music during 2016, singing and music making has shown to offer huge benefits for this group of women and we are excited to be the launch pad for the programme in our own local communities. Watch out for more publicity on this during early 2017.

This performance will take place in the following location
