Melodies for Mums / Southwark

From Tue-14-Nov 1:45pm to Tue-06-Feb 4:30pm

Melodies for Mums is a new service for mums who might be suffering from stress, anxiety, low mood or low self-esteem after the birth. The babies can be up to about nine months old at the start of the project (if your baby is a little older than this please do talk to us about this). The programme will consist of 10 weekly singing and music-making sessions for groups of up to 14 mums with babies.  The sessions will run on Tuesday afternoons from Mid-November for 10 weeks, finishing in early 2018 and will be held at the Ellen Brown Children’s Centre in Bermondsey in the London Borough of  Southwark. There will be 2 sessions to choose from – one from about 1:45pm – 2:45pm and one from about 3:15-4:15pm.

Singing and music-making can:

  • Provide a natural opportunity for mum and baby to bond
  • Be a natural stress reliever
  • Help build confidence
  • Allow mums to connect with other mums in a similar situation

The sessions are led by an experienced music leader and supported by a music student and staff from Breathe. Mums will learn simple songs they can sing for themselves and to their babies to help with bonding. No experience of singing is required. Sessions are free but mums will need to complete a screening form in advance to ensure they are suitable.

Melodies for Mums – F A Q

What is the purpose of the Melodies for Mums project?
It is increasingly recognised that new mothers can experience stress, anxiety and feelings of low mood. Recent research led by the Royal College of Music and Imperial College London has shown that singing classes can help to improve wellbeing in new mothers. Consequently, this project is providing singing classes for mothers living in or near Southwark.

What does the project involve?
The project is being led by Breathe Arts Health Research in partnership with the Royal College of Music. It offers 10 weeks of free singing classes for new mothers and their babies. You will meet other mothers living in the local area, take part in musical games with your babies and learn new songs that you can sing at home with them.

Who is eligible to take part?
The project is designed for women who have given birth in the last nine months and who feel that they might be experiencing symptoms of stress, anxiety or low mood and who are interested in taking part in music activities with their babies. We are giving preference to women who live in the borough of Southwark and Lambeth but you if you live outside these you are still eligible to apply to join.

Why do I have to complete an eligibility check online?
The online questionnaire asks for contact details and also assesses your wellbeing levels. This will help us to determine whether you meet the criteria for a free place on the programme.

Will I have to complete any further questionnaires?
Yes, we will invite you to complete two further questionnaires, halfway through the programme and at the end. These are to help us evaluate the project, so we can see if you are enjoying it, if it is having any benefits for you and what we can do in the future to improve it.

Will my information be kept confidential?
Yes your information will be kept confidential. We will not share any of your personal details or identifiable responses to the questionnaires publicly. However, if at any point during the project we have any concern for your wellbeing, we will send a confidential letter to your GP or healthcare visitor (whichever you provide us with the details of) so that they can provide some additional support for you.

Can I tell people I am taking part?
Yes, and if you know other people who would like to take part too you can pass the details of the project on to them.
