Breathe Magic: The Young Magicians’ Reunion 2025

Wed 2 Apr

At Breathe Arts Health Research, we know that magic is more than just tricks and illusions—it’s a tool for transformation, empowerment, and connection. That’s why we were thrilled to welcome Young Magicians, their families, and Magic Mentors back to The Magic Circle for a truly special event, Breathe Magic: The Young Magicians’ Reunion.

This unforgettable day brought together graduates of the Breathe Magic Intensive Therapy Programme (BMITP), giving them the chance to reconnect, share their experiences, and, of course, immerse themselves in the wonder of magic once again.

We were joined by Young Magicians from across the years, from 2010 through to 2024, with some even bringing their own children to the event!

What is the Breathe Magic Intensive Therapy Programme (BMITP)?

For those unfamiliar, BMITP is an innovative intervention  that incorporates specially selected magic tricks that provoke specific two-handed actions, performance and problem-solving skills into an intensive bimanual and goal-oriented therapy programme for young people with hemiplegia, since 2008.

Grounded in world-class medical research, this award-winning approach gives young people access to over 60 hours of bimanual intensive therapy and transforms them into young magicians. Highly specialist occupational therapists work alongside Magic Circle magicians to provide therapy in a group setting with one-to-one support, delivering interventions tailored to suit each young person’s particular strengths and needs.

And it works. Research shows that depending on initial abilities, between 75% and 92% of children who take part experience clinically significant improvements in hand function after the programme. But the impact goes beyond the physical – by learning high-quality magic and performance skills in a fun & safe environment, young people improve their pyschosocial skills such as building confidence, self-esteem and emotional wellbeing.

I was excited for weeks and very happy when I saw my best Magic friend was coming. Also learning the magic tricks was brilliant because I showed some people on the train and they all got involved. Saying hello to the trainers that trained me and seeing the magic show was amazing

A Day of Magic, Connection, and Celebration

The Young Magicians’ Reunion was all about rekindling those feelings of accomplishment and community. Held at the prestigious Magic Circle headquarters in London, the day provided a space for Young Magicians and their families to catch up, share stories, and strengthen their peer support networks.

From the moment they arrived, the air was filled with excitement. Young Magicians reconnected with old friends, parents shared experiences, and everyone soaked in the inspiring atmosphere of The Magic Circle, a place steeped in history, wonder, and the spirit of magic.

Throughout the day, participants had the opportunity to learn from an amazing team of Breathe Magic Magicians, who provided encouragement, guidance, and plenty of laughter along the way. Whether perfecting their sleight-of-hand skills, exchanging ideas, or simply reminiscing about their time on the programme, it was a reminder that once you’re part of the Breathe Magic family, you always belong.

An Enchanting Theatre Show

Of course, no magical gathering would be complete without a show-stopping performance, and this year’s reunion did not disappoint.

The afternoon’s spectacular theatre show featured an all-star line-up of Guy Hollingworth, Michael Vincent, Laura London, Richard McDougall, and Edward Hilsum – each a master of their craft.

From ropes that wouldn’t stay the same length to bottles of wine multiplying out of thin air, the show was packed with surprises. Richard McDougall’s iconic sugar-filled tea routine had the audience in stitches, while Edward Hilsum’s breathtaking sleight-of-hand left everyone spellbound. It was a performance that perfectly captured the magic of the day filled with laughter, wonder, and a sense of limitless possibility.

The Power of Magic Beyond the Tricks

At its heart, BMITP is about so much more than just learning tricks. It’s about building the skills to perform two-handed daily activities with increased independence, improving psychosocial skills such as confidence, self-esteem, and emotional well-being and making life-long friendships meeting other young people with hemiplegia.

The Young Magicians’ Reunion was a beautiful reminder of that mission in action. Seeing past participants thriving, sharing their successes, and continuing to embrace magic as a tool for empowerment was nothing short of inspiring.

To everyone who attended, thank you for bringing your energy, enthusiasm, and passion. To our amazing mentors, ambassadors, and performers—your support and dedication makes all of our work on Breathe Magic possible.

And to those who support the programme in any way – your generosity helps ensure that more young people can experience the life-changing impact of occupational therapy combined with magic.

Here’s to many more magical reunions in the future!

The whole day was a treat from start to finish, from meeting up with their magician buddies, to the way David, Richard and the Breathe team made everyone feel special, and the spectacular show from the magicians at the end, I couldn't have asked for a better day.
