In-person Melodies for Mums sessions are BACK

Mon 13 Sep 2021

Calling all new mums in London! Melodies for Mums free in-person programmes starting in October.

In 2021 alone, we’ve worked with over 100 mums and their babies. We have been delivering sessions online due to the pandemic and 90% of participating mums still experienced an improvement in their symptoms. So, imagine what we can do when we all sing together in a room!

That’s why we’re SO excited to be offering a new 10-week programme of Melodies for Mums in person this autumn. Starting on Tuesday 5th October, our singing sessions are free and based in South London but are open to mums across the capital.

A supportive environment for new mums

Melodies for Mums is a ground-breaking service designed to support women who have recently had a baby and are experiencing symptoms associated with postnatal depression such as low mood, stress or anxiety.  Groups of up to 10 women and their babies, come together in a warm, welcoming environment and simply sing. The sessions allow you to meet other women who are going through something similar, help you bond with your baby, give you a toolkit for interacting with your baby outside of the group, and offer an outlet for the emotions you may be experiencing.

About the sessions

Sessions are led by Breathe’s experienced singing leaders, who place mum at the heart of the sessions. Songs come from all around the world and often reflect the mother and baby experience, with empowering songs to help women find their voices whilst providing a toolkit of songs for any scenario from feeding and bath time to walks in the park.

You don’t need to be able to sing like Jennifer Hudson to join either! Your baby will love the sound of your voice whatever. The emphasis is on feeling a sense of togetherness with other mums (without the need to talk about your personal challenges), interacting with your baby, and most importantly, making YOU feel good.

You’ll be helping other women too

What’s more, by taking part in Melodies for Mums, you’ll be part of an amazing research study with King’s College London looking into the impact of singing on maternal mental health that will mean this programme can hopefully be offered to other women across the country in the future. All women who join the study will take part in Melodies for Mums.  Some will be offered other mother and baby groups as part of the research, before joining the 10-week singing programme.

Who can join?

The programme is open to any new mother with babies aged 0 – 9 months, living in London and currently experiencing feelings of loneliness, low mood and anxiety. You don’t need a ‘diagnosis’ of postnatal depression to sign up. Are you finding it difficult to regulate your emotions? Do you need extra support? We are here for YOU.
