Stephanie’s Journey with Breathe Melodies for Mums

Tue 6 May

Stephanie, then a first-time mum, joined the Breathe Melodies for Mums online programme in December 2023 when her baby, Caitlin, was 3-4 months old. Having recently relocated to Bristol from London, Stephanie was experiencing the added challenge of adjusting to motherhood in a new city—one she had moved to just a year or two before her baby was born, and during the pandemic. The isolation of the situation was intensified by the lack of a solid support network, making her feel disconnected and uncertain about what she was experiencing.

“I didn’t have a good support system, and I wasn’t sure if the way I was feeling was due to hormones, the life change, or the move,” Stephanie reflects.

When she first saw an advertisement for Breathe Melodies for Mums online sessions on Facebook, she was intrigued. It felt like a natural fit for someone like her, struggling to adjust to new motherhood.

At the time, Stephanie was feeling low and overwhelmed and wasn’t sure if she was just adjusting to the life changes or if it was something more.

I didn’t have a good support system, and I wasn’t sure if the way I was feeling was due to hormones, the life change, or the move

Stephanie’s first impression of the Breathe Melodies for Mums online sessions was overwhelmingly positive. “It was so good to finally be in a group where everyone was a mum, especially as I hadn’t done much antenatal work before,” she shares. “What stood out most was how the programme focused on mum’s wellbeing rather than just the baby.”

The sessions, though online, had a profound impact on her. Music played a key role in lifting her mood and connecting with her baby. “The songs were so well chosen, and I loved the diversity—some of them weren’t even in English!” she says. “One song in particular was a game-changer for me. My daughter didn’t enjoy her baths and would cry, but the song we learned in the session helped calm her down. I play it for her all the time now.”

One of the highlights of the experience for Stephanie was having access to the resource hub after the session. This allowed her to revisit the songs outside of the group setting, helping her integrate the music into her daily life

It was something I could do from my living room, with my baby, while connecting with others. It brought joy to our home and gave me a sense of community that I really needed.

Another key factor for Stephanie was that the programme was free. As a new mum, unsure if she and her baby would enjoy or benefit from the group, the no-cost nature of the programme made it easy to give it a try without financial pressure.

Reflecting on how the programme impacted her overall wellbeing, Stephanie credits Breathe Melodies for Mums as a huge part of her recovery  “It was something I could do from my living room, with my baby, while connecting with others. It brought joy to our home and gave me a sense of community that I really needed.”

The music also became a source of comfort and connection for her husband. “He told me that hearing the songs I was singing was the highlight of his week,” Stephanie recalls.

Stephanie is currently expecting a second baby and as her due date approaches, she reflects on how much Breathe Melodies for Mums helped her navigate the challenges of early motherhood. “I’d recommend this programme to every new mum,” she says warmly. “It’s just so valuable for both the mum and the baby. There’s no downside to giving it a try.”

Stephanie’s experience with the programme exemplifies the profound impact of music, community, and self-care during the challenging transition into motherhood. Her journey highlights the power of accessible, mum-focused support during a time that can often feel isolating and overwhelming.  Our recent SHAPER-PNDO research study conducted with KCL and UCL (funded by Wellcome Trust) looking at the impact of online group singing on the mental health and wellbeing of new mothers supports this. We are so grateful to be part of Stephanie’s recovery and continue to be inspired by her story.
