Three Fully Funded Places in Wandsworth for the Breathe Magic Intensive Therapy Programme

Tue 11 Feb

At Breathe Arts Health Research, we believe in the power of creativity to transform lives, especially when it comes to young people facing complex challenges. That’s why we’re excited to offer an extraordinary opportunity for families in the Wandsworth area. We have three fully funded places available for young people aged 6-18 with hemiplegia to participate in our Breathe Magic Intensive Therapy Programme – a unique, evidence-based approach to therapy that combines occupational therapy with magic. These three places (each valued at over £6,000), offer a tremendous opportunity for families who might otherwise struggle to access such transformative therapy.

Breathe Magic is no ordinary therapy programme. It’s a fun and engaging two-week intensive designed to help young people with hemiplegia (a condition that causes weakness, stiffness, or paralysis on one side of the body due to brain injury). Using a combination of bimanual (two-handed) therapy and specially designed magic tricks, we aim to improve fine motor skills, strength, and coordination, while also fostering a sense of achievement and confidence.

Our expert occupational therapists work alongside talented Magic Circle magicians to deliver a programme that is both goal-oriented and tailored to each young person’s individual needs. This collaboration between therapy and creativity creates an environment where learning becomes exciting, and progress is something to celebrate.

Millie's experience at Breathe Magic Camp has been transformative. She’s gained new friends, grown in confidence and self-belief, and feels a huge boost from her newfound ability to perform everyday tasks with both hands. This new independence brings her immense pride as she shows friends and family what she’s learned, and she finds great joy in practicing her new magic skills.

A Unique Approach to Therapy

The power of Breathe Magic lies in its innovative blend of therapy and fun. Traditional therapies can often feel daunting or repetitive for children, but by integrating magic tricks into the sessions, we’re able to make therapeutic work feel like play. Magic offers a natural way to promote bimanual actions, which are essential for young people with hemiplegia, while simultaneously building skills that help with daily living tasks. Each child sets their own personal goals, and our therapists adapt the programme to meet their specific needs.

One of the other unique aspects of the Breathe Magic programme is its group setting. Working alongside other children facing similar challenges fosters a sense of community and connection. This group environment, paired with one-to-one support, creates a nurturing space where participants thrive, connect, and reach their full potential.

Magic camp taught me to be confident in myself and not care what anybody else thinks of me. I felt like I belonged somewhere for the first time in my life. I felt like I belonged with everybody. I felt happy.

The Science Behind Breathe Magic

There is strong evidence to support the effectiveness of our approach. Bimanual therapy has been shown to improve fine motor function and increase independence in daily tasks for children with hemiplegia. But we’re not just relying on anecdotal evidence – our programme is grounded in research that demonstrates the measurable benefits of combining physical therapy with creativity. This evidence continues to grow, and we are committed to ensuring that the programme evolves to meet the needs of those who take part.

Depending on initial abilities, between 75% and 92% of children have clinically significant improvements in hand function after the Breathe Magic camp
